DeShaney v. Winnebago County

The  DeShaney v. Winnebago County case occured in 1989. IT was a case about a young boy, his parents and the county. The case was about a young boy named Joshua DeShaney who was abused by his father. Before Josh moved in with his dad, his parents divorced and had a custody battle. The dad won single custody. The mom found out about the abuse after Josh suffered servere brain damage and reported the abuse. The county put the father in counsiling but dodn't give the child a new home. He has to remain living with his father. Poor Josh is only a 4 year old defenceless child living in an abusive home becuase the county can't do anything else.

This had an impact on me becuase  I know this case didn't go as it should've. The county knew the father was abusing his son and yet they still let the child stay at the house. I felt pity for the child. He's small,, He's defenceless and he did nothing wrong. It hurts to hear that the county would letthis continue. I was attracted to this case also because I hear alot about cases such as this one. My Mom works for child services and helps get kids out of abusive homes. There was a similar situation but the son was older and kept the abuse a secret. He oo severed head damage. I think the Supreme Courtmade a bad call and this upsets me.

The Ups And Downs Of Being Gifted And Asynchronous Development

In class today we started our discussion on what it means to be gifted and ended up having a big discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of being gifted. A lot of things that were said I could relate to.But I didn't get a say in the conversation so, here's what I think:

THE PROS

There are many advantages that come with being gifted. Looking back through the years all the teachers I've had have had gifted students whose footprints are still in the classroom, usually they are the examples for projects or the center of a great story. Even now, some of my gifted classmates are favorites of the teachers. You could say teachers favor gifted kids more only because they could always count on them for an answer, great effort, and the willingness to learn. Not only does being gifted make you favored among the teachers, it also makes school, easier. It makes whatever material you're learning faster, clearer, and easier to understand. Being gifted also allows you to experience things most students will never get the chance to. As we saw in class the other day, everything that was fun and challenging to us stuck with us all these years and most students can't say they did the same things as us.Most of those things were activities and projects were given to us in our gifted and talented class so most of our other classmates didn't get to participate and missed out. For this reason we are lucky and grateful.

THE CONS

Being "Gifted" is a blessing and a curse for Students:" But teasing is only one of the difficulties gifted children experience. Research also shows that they feel a constant pressure to excel at their work and,at times, even to help other children with their schoolwork".  Being gifted has its disadvantage. The biggest disadvantage to being gifted is the pressure. Pressure from your parents;pressure from the teachers; but the biggest pressure is from myself. Teachers expect good grades, attitude and effort, parents expect High A's and I expect to do better each and every time I get a new assignment. Eventually, the pressure builds up to the boiling point and you can't take it anymore. I also  feel pressure because I know some people  don't like"smart" people. They think it's not cool and some of my friends have changed because of that. I feel some of them act as if they don't care anymore.I sometimes am scared to tell people I'm in ROGATE or get straight A's because some of our peers are judgemental.Teasing is another issue. When people call me smart but in a sarcastic way it makes me feel bad. And when I don't understand a problem my classmate expects me to know everything. The worst feeling is when you are paired with someone who needs your help and you can't help them. I guess I'm just sensitive because I want to exceed peoples expectations and I want people to like me but its hard when they judge you on what you know.

Asynchronous Development

A: not
Sync: together
Chronous: time

Asynchronous development is when you don't grow evenly pysically, emotionally, and intellectually.  An example of asynchronous development is when you are mature intellectually but you not prepared to handle that knowlegde emotionally and physically you're young and weak too.

All About Me

Hi,my name is Brianna and I am in the 8th grade. My favorite subjects are math and writing. My favorite topics to learn about are anything with problem solving. In the small amount of free time I have, I like to relax, watch TV,sleep, and play with my dog Coco( she's a 7 pound yorkie). I also like to play on the computer in my free time. When I grow up, I don't know what I want to be. I'm still searching through all my options and finding what I love to do and what is my passion. hopefully I'll know where to go. Many things make me happy like family, friends, basketball, soccer, and Spongebob!
